Covid-19: 15.5 million people vaccinated in Brazil, 7.32% of the population (March 28)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The number of people vaccinated against Covid-19 with at least the first dose in Brazil reached 15,504,363 this Sunday, March 28, according to data gathered by the consortium of media outlets. The number represents 7.32% of the total Brazilian population.

In the last 24 hours, 255,516 first doses were applied. Among the 15.5 million vaccinated, 4.7 million people have received the second dose, which represents 2.22% of the population with complete immunization. In the last 24 hours, 20,789 people received this booster dose.

Adding up the first and second doses, Brazil applied 276,305 doses on Sunday, according to data provided by 16 states that updated the figures.

On Friday, March 26, the governor of São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB), announced that the Butantan Institute will request authorization to begin clinical trials of Butanvac, a possible new vaccine against covid-19. The goal is to have 40 million doses ready by the end of this year.

After the announcement, the federal government also reported that other national immunizers are at an advanced stage.

According to the Minister of Science and Technology, Marcos Pontes, one of them, developed by the School of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto (FMRP), from USP, in partnership with the biotech company Farmacore, is just waiting for authorization from the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (Anvisa) to start being tested in humans.
