Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon drops 34% in February, reports SECOM

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Operation Verde Brasil 2 continues to show significant results in the fight against deforestation in the Amazon. In February, the warnings in the region dropped 34% compared to the same month last year. In the last seven months, the accumulated reduction reached 21%, reports the Presidency’s Special Secretariat of Social Communication SECOM.

The reduction is the result of the uninterrupted actions of the Armed Forces, environmental agencies and public security bodies in the fight against deforestation and environmental crimes in the Legal Amazon.

In 10 months of Operation Green Brazil 2, 496,500 cubic meters of wood, 1,846 vessels and 890 vehicles were seized. More than 4,900  fines and terms of infraction were applied, totaling R$ 3.339 billion.
