Brazil passes India, becomes country with second-highest cumulative Covid-19 cases

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On Friday, March 12th, Brazil was once again the country with the second-highest number of Covid-19 cases, according to data from Johns Hopkins University, passing India and second only to the United States.

Brazil has reached the 11,363,380 cases mark, while India registers 11,308,846. The United States counts 29,340,202 cases and holds first place in the ranking.

Brazil remains in second position in the list of countries with the highest number of deaths from the disease, with 275,105, behind the United States, with 532,326. In third place comes Mexico, with 193,142, and India is in fourth, with 158,306.

However, considering the data collected by the media outlet consortium, the numbers of cases and deaths in Brazil are even higher than as recorded by Johns Hopkins: on Friday, 11,368,316 cases and 275,276 deaths were reported.

Brazil became the country with the second-most Covid-19 cases for the first time on May 22nd, 2020, when it reached 330,890 cases and passed Russia, with 326,448. At the time, the United States was the only country to record over a million cases, with 1,598,631.

On September 7th, India reached 4.2 million cases and passed Brazil in the ranking, at that time with 4.13 million people infected. The United States remained in first place, with over 6.4 million positive diagnoses.
