Brazil’s president again says he will expose Pfizer’s demands on Brazil for vaccine purchase

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – President Jair Bolsonaro said on Wednesday, February 24th, that the purchase of Pfizer vaccines is “something of great responsibility” given the requirements imposed by the American pharmaceutical company.

Bolsonaro said once again that he will show to the population all contractual requirements imposed by the laboratory so that “everyone knows” what is being administered.

Yesterday, Pfizer was granted final registration by the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency to use its covid-19 vaccine in the country. The Brazilian government is still negotiating the purchase of the immunizer. Health Minister Eduardo Pazuello has complained about the manufacturer’s contractual terms, which include a clause stating that the manufacturer is not liable for any potential side effects caused by the immunizer.

“It is a matter of great responsibility for anyone in Brazil who has the final word. If it is the president, if it is the House overturning a potential veto, or if it is the Supreme Court. All clauses will be presented to the population so that, down the line, everyone will know what is being administered,” said the president.

Alongside Bolsonaro, the Health Minister said that he requested help from the Planalto Palace to mediate the negotiations. “It is a high level of discussion, and it is up to me to comply with whatever comes. If a clear authorization comes, relaxing all activities, we will buy Pfzier and Janssen’s. The delivery schedule has already been provided to us,” he said.
