Five Family Members Die in Crash on Highway in Minas Gerais State

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Five people from the same family died in a crash on BR-135, in Montes Claros, in the north of Minas Gerais state on Friday morning, December 25th.

According to information from the Fire Department, they were in a car that entered the opposite lane and crashed head-on with a truck. Experts were called in and the causes of the accident will be investigated. The truck driver was not injured.

“The driver reported that the car suddenly invaded the opposite lane and he tried to swerve, but was unable to prevent the crash. Four victims were flung out and a man was trapped by his legs. It’s a sad scene on such an important date,” said Lt. Walderides Cangussu.

According to the State Highway Police, the family had left Itapecerica da Serra (SP) bound for Bahia.

“In the vehicle, there was a couple with two children (a boy and an 11-year-old girl), and another adult man, who is also a family member, but we still don’t know the kinship. The victims were disfigured and we couldn’t identify who had been driving the car,” explained State Police Corporal Eduardo Mesquita.

The trucker was taken to the police station to provide clarifications. The bodies of the five victims were taken to the Montes Claros Forensic Medicine Institute.

The accident occurred at around 10 AM and traffic was cleared early in the afternoon after the car was removed and the track cleaned.

According to the State Police report, the victims are Vanete Ramos da Cunha, 38 years old; Vinícius Ramos Cunha, 19; Adelvaldo de Jesus Souza, 37; Gilvan Brito Silva, 32; Maria Eduarda Ramos Souza, 11.
