Rio de Janeiro Police Officer Killed with Head Shot When Trying to Prevent Robbery

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A State Police (PM) officer was surprised and killed when trying to prevent a robbery on Friday, December 4th, in Mesquita, one of the Rio suburbs located in Baixada Fluminense.

Corporal Derinaldo Cardoso dos Santos, 34, was shot close range in the head and did not survive. He leaves a wife and two children. CCTV footage of the market that was being robbed shows how the assailant hid behind some goods before shooting the PM and fleeing.

According to TV Band, another person in the store was shot in the leg but is not in danger. Corporal Cardoso was active in the 20th PM Battalion. He was rushed to hospital but died on Saturday, December 5th.

The officer was buried in the Jardim da Saudade cemetery, in Sulacap, West Zone.

The municipality of Mesquita decreed an official three-day mourning. “Yesterday we lost not only someone who fought for the safety and welfare of the entire population of the state of Rio”, it declared in a statement.
