Since 8 PM the preceding day, Brazil recorded 23,815 new infections and 622 more deaths. In total, there have been 5,590,941 infections and 161,170 deaths as a result of the novel coronavirus since the outbreak of the pandemic.

The data are provided by the media outlets consortium, comprising Estadão, G1, O Globo, Extra, Folha and UOL, and prepared in partnership with the state Health Secretariats. The Ministry of Health’s update for the same date reports that 5,064,344 people have recovered and another 364,575 are still under follow-up.

São Paulo is the state with the highest absolute figures for Covid-19 in the country, totaling 1,123,299 cases and 39,549 deaths on Wednesday. Over the past 24 hours, 4,755 new cases and 185 deaths were reported. According to the balance released by the State Health Secretariat, 1,023,085 people have recovered, and 123,023 were hospitalized and discharged. ICU bed occupancy rates stand at 41.9 percent in Greater São Paulo and 39.3 percent in the state.

In terms of infections, Brazil is the world’s third most affected country by the pandemic, according to the Johns Hopkins University count, and has the second-highest number of Covid-19 deaths.

Partnership

The rolling average calculation of deaths and cases is the result of a partnership between the six media outlets that began working together since June 8th to compile the required data in all 26 states and the Federal District.

The Ministry of Health’s figures differ from the data compiled by the media outlet consortium mainly due to the time of data collection.
