RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – At 105 years of age, pensioner Guiomar Helena de Oliveira has been cured of the infection caused by the coronavirus and was discharged from the Itumbiara Field Hospital, in southern Goiás, where she had been hospitalized since September 19th.

Her medical team celebrated her discharge with a party. Posters by the team honoring the elderly woman read: “We are happy for your victory” and “great battles are awarded to great warriors”.

Maria Heloísa, 28, granddaughter of the elderly woman, says that she passed through two hospitals, including the Itumbiara Field Hospital, to be treated after testing positive for the disease, on September 3rd. An x-ray last week pointed to pneumonia caused by the virus.

“She is very strong and it is exciting to see her fighting for her life at this age, even after spending many days in the hospital to be treated for the coronavirus,” reports Heloísa.

Hospitalization

The retiree was admitted to the hospital on September 19th with clinical symptoms of Covid-19. Despite her age, she did not need to be referred to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The positive diagnosis for the coronavirus was delivered on September 3rd. The elderly woman was running a fever and had a sore throat. She was even admitted to a hospital in Buriti Alegre for ten days, from where she was discharged to recover at home.

Feeling new symptoms of the disease, the retiree was taken to the Itumbiara Field Hospital. An x-ray ordered by a doctor revealed pneumonia. She was hospitalized for three more days and was released again to complete the treatment at home.
