Bolsonaro Says It’s Time to Return to Normal and to Jobs

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On Sunday, August 23rd, President Jair Bolsonaro said on social media that it is time to open trade responsibly, return to normality and rescue jobs.

On video, he quoted the W.H.O. statement to recall that he has always advocated fighting the pandemic together with the economy.

Bolsonaro stated that the W.H.O. said on Friday, August 21st, that ” the pandemic is proof that health and the economy are inseparable”. “Since March I have been warning that we have two serious problems, the virus and unemployment, and that both should be addressed simultaneously,” wrote the President.

On the video, the President shares his March address. “Five months after my statement, the WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, states that health and the economy are inseparable”, he said.

“Over these five months, a number of authorities have destroyed jobs. The federal government did its part. It has provided the means for small and medium-sized businesses to keep their employees.

It also established the R$600 (US$120) emergency aid that lasted for five months. This amount may not be a lot for those who receive it, but it’s a lot for Brazil, which is spending R$50 billion per month,” the President said.

According to information from the Ministry of Health, until Saturday, August 22nd, the country had recorded 114,250 deaths by Covid-19 and 3,582,362 cases since the first notification.
