Bolsonaro Confirms Extension of Emergency Aid Payments Until December

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On Friday, August 21st, President Jair Bolsonaro confirmed that the emergency aid will be extended until December, but did not specify the amount of the benefit’s future installment payments to help people face the novel coronavirus.

“Unfortunately it can’t be permanent,” said Bolsonaro. When asked by the audience, the President said that the transfer will be sustained until December. “I simply don’t know its amount,” he added in a ceremony in Ipanguaçu, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, which inaugurated a water desalination project.

The President said the aid – currently R$600 per month – has a cost of R$50 billion per month. “We will maintain it as long as we can, but we must be aware that it can’t be permanent,” he said.
