Regina Duarte, ex-Culture Secretary, Tells Friends She Would Like to Return to TV Globo

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – After swapping a successful 50-year career as an actress with a great salary at Globo for a position in the Jair Bolsonaro government, Regina Duarte dreams, quite literally, of returning to the past.

She has been signaling and even talking to actor friends and TV Globo writers, stating that she would like to work in telenovelas (soap operas) again.

Regina Duarte said to at least one telenovela writer that she would accept if the writer in question were to invite her to play another role in the future.

In February this year, the 73-year-old actress left Globo to take on the post of Special Secretary of Culture in the Bolsonaro administration.

Regina’s stay was short. As soon as she took over last March, she was attacked by right-wing ideologists, sabotaged by officials she fired, persecuted on the Internet, insulted by former colleagues, even humiliated.

She eventually threw in the towel and resigned. The actress says she has no regrets, saying she had a project for Culture and wanted to help the country.

Amazingly enough, she never closed the door on Globo so it is quite possible that her dream of returning to the past will be realized, and that she will go back to playing in telenovelas.

Critics have suggested that this time she should be cast in the role of a brainless villain.
