Covid-19: Brazil Reports Second Consecutive Day with High New Case Rate (June 26th)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil had its second consecutive day with the highest number of new Covid-19 cases recorded, according to the report released yesterday, June 26th, by the Ministry of Health. There were 46,860 infections added to the statistics. As a result, the total increased to 1,274,974 confirmed cases, holding second place in the world ranking, behind only the United States.

The mark was passed last Friday, June 19th, when the 24-hour total reached a record of 54,771 new notifications. After a downward trend between the previous week and last week, cases have increased again in epidemiological week 25, as the Ministry of Health noted.

The number of new deaths from the novel coronavirus pandemic totaled 990, below the preceding days. On Thursday, 1,141 new deaths were recorded; on Wednesday, June 24th, it was 1,185; and on Tuesday, June 23rd, it was 1,374. The total number of deaths from Covid-19 stood at 55,961, more than the maximum capacity of the Beira-Rio Stadium in Porto Alegre.

The lethality rate (number of deaths by total cases) stood at 4.4 percent, while the mortality rate (number of deaths per 100,000 population) reached 26.6 percent. The incidence of Covid-19 cases in the country stands at 606.7 per 100,000.

The Ministry of Health balance reports 521,487 patients still undergoing treatment, while the total of recovered cases since the start of the pandemic stands at 697,526.

States

The states with the highest number of deaths are São Paulo (13,966), Rio de Janeiro (9,587), Ceará (5,920), Pará (4,803) and Pernambuco (4,610). Other states with high numbers of victims from the pandemic are Amazonas (2,739), Maranhão (1,906), Bahia (1,642), Espírito Santo (1,507), Alagoas (975) and Paraíba (864).
