The main data for Brazil are:

  • 27,878 deaths; there were 26,754 on Thursday;
  • A total of 1,124 deaths were reported in 24 hours, 331 over the last 3 days;
  • 465,166 confirmed cases; there were 438,238 on Thursday;
  • A total of 26,928 cases in 24 hours were included;
  • 247,812 patients are under follow-up (53.3 percent).

Also according to the Ministry of Health, 4,245 deaths are still under investigation.

Brazil reached this level 73 days after recording its first death, ten days before Spain, which has now completed its 87th day since the same initial mark. On Monday, May 26th, the Spanish government removed almost 2,000 deaths from its official count to correct duplicated figures, after a review of the data already published.

Brazil passed Spain while it is still recording a daily increase of deaths by Covid-19, close to 1,000. This was the 4th straight day that Brazil recorded over 1,000 deaths from coronavirus daily, while Spain had only two such days.

The number of victims in Spanish hospitals has been decreasing since April 9th, when the country experienced its daily peak in deaths, with 961 recorded in only 24 hours. Brazil recorded the highest death toll to date on Thursday, May 21st when it totaled 1,188 victims in one day.

The rate for every 100,000 inhabitants suggests that Brazil records 13.3 deaths per 100,000 people. In comparison, the country is behind France (42.7), the United States (31.1), Italy (55), the United Kingdom (57.3), and Spain (57.7).

This rate illustrates the impact of the virus in less populous countries, such as France (66.9 million), the United Kingdom (66.6 million), Italy (60.3 million), and Spain (47 million), compared with the United States (329.5 million) and Brazil (209.5 million).

The daily peak in these countries has been reached longer ago than in Brazil, and many are currently experiencing a slowdown in the death count. The United States hit its highest record (2,612) on April 29th, France (1,417) on April 7th, the United Kingdom (1,172) on April 29th and Italy (919) on March 27th, according to the Johns Hopkins University survey.
