ICU Bed Occupancy Rate in Greater São Paulo Exceeds 91 Percent

SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL – The intensive care unit (ICU) bed occupancy rate in Greater São Paulo yesterday, May 24th, reached 91.8 percent. Throughout the state, the ICU bed occupancy rate stands at 75.7 percent.

According to the São Paulo State Health Secretariat, the State has 11,900 patients hospitalized for suspected or confirmed infection with the novel coronavirus, 4,661 of whom are in ICUs and 7,321 in wards.

With 118 deaths recorded in the previous 24 hours, thesState of São Paulo yesterday counted 6,136 deaths because of the novel coronavirus. Most deaths were of patients aged 60 or older : 72.9 percent of all cases.

Outside of this elderly group, there is also high mortality among people aged 50 to 59 (892 of the total), followed by those aged 40 to 49 (455 deaths), 30 to 39 (242), 20 to 29 (53) and 10 to 19 (17). Ten children under the age of ten have also died. Of the total number of patients who died from the novel coronavirus in the State, 4,981 had some co-morbidity.

The total number of confirmed cases reached 81,161 and were reported in 508 of the State’s 645 municipalities, confirming that the disease has spread rapidly inland. The total of recovered patients now totals 16,494.
