Government Bans Foreigners From Entering Brazil for 30 Days to Contain Coronavirus

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The federal government, on Friday, May 20th, published an extra edition of the Federal Gazette restricting the entry of foreigners into Brazil for 30 days as a result of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The entry of foreigners of any nationality is prohibited, whether by land, air, or water transport. The 30 days may be extended upon recommendation of the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA), the body advising the restriction.

The restriction does not apply to native or naturalized Brazilians; immigrants who have permanent residence in Brazil; foreign professionals on missions serving international organizations; passengers in international transit, provided they do not leave the international area of airports and that the country of destination allows their entry; foreign employees accredited with the Brazilian Government; in addition to foreigners who are spouses, partners, children, parents or guardians of Brazilians; who have their entry authorized by the Brazilian government or are holders of the National Migration Register.

The ban does not affect activities such as cross-border humanitarian actions and the transport and unloading of cargo, among other activities.

The ordinance was signed by the Chief of Staff, Braga Netto, the Minister of Justice and Public Safety, André Mendonça, the Minister of Infrastructure, Tarcisio Freitas, and the Minister of Health, Eduardo Pazuelo.
