Masks Now Mandatory in Public Transportation Throughout Rio de Janeiro State

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The use of masks inside intermunicipal transport vehicles will be mandatory as of today, May 8th, in the whole state of Rio de Janeiro.

A decree published on Wednesday, May 6th, by Governor Wilson Witzel determines that passengers and public transport employees will be required to wear masks.

The requirement extends to ferries, passenger trains and subways, in addition to intercity bus lines (which run in more than one city).

The goal is to avert the spread of the novel coronavirus that causes Covid-19. The disease has already claimed 1,205 lives across the state. Over 13,000 Covid cases have been confirmed.

In the city of Rio de Janeiro, the use of masks on public transporation and inside stores has been mandatory since April 23rd.
