“You know that the people are with us, the armed forces are on the side of law, order, democracy, freedom are also on our side. We are going to move on, I pray to God that we don’t have a problem this week, because we have reached our limit, there is no more talking, from now on, we will not only demand, we will enforce the Constitution, it will be enforced at any cost. Tomorrow we will appoint a new Federal Police director, and Brazil will follow its course”, he said in a speech published on his social media.

The President’s speech came in the week when Federal Supreme Court (STF) Justice Alexandre de Moraes banned the appointment of deputy Alexandre Ramagem to the Federal Police (PF), and ex-Minister Sérgio Moro testified in a proceeding at the STF investigating whether Bolsonaro tried to interfere with the PF in order to gain illegal access to confidential inquiries that target his sons and supporters.

President Jair Bolsonaro took part in a demonstration in favor of his government on Sunday, May 3rd, with slogans against the STF and Chamber of Deputies President Rodrigo Maia.

“What we want is the best for our country, the true independence of the three Powers, not just a letter in the Constitution. No more interference, let’s not allow interference anymore, our patience is over. Let’s take Brazil forward,” he said.

The President also said the demonstration organized in Brasília was voluntary, with heads of families, “for governability, democracy, and freedom.” He also stated that he has the people and the Armed Forces at his side for “law, order, democracy, and freedom.”

When advocating a return to work, the President said that “unfortunately” many will be infected by the novel coronavirus, and that many will lose their lives, but added that “this is a reality that we must face”.

“The country will face its problems, we know the effect of the virus, but unfortunately many will be infected, unfortunately many will lose their lives too, but this is a reality, and we have to face it. We cannot allow the side effects of the virus treatment to be more harmful than the virus itself,” he said.

Bolsonaro also said that Brazil “as a whole” is complaining for a return to work and that “irresponsible” governors are destroying jobs. “Brazil as a whole is demanding the return to work, this irresponsible destruction of jobs by some governors is unacceptable, the price will be very high up ahead, unemployment, misery”, he said.

On Saturday, May 2nd, Brazil counted 96,559 people diagnosed with Covid-19 and 6,759 deaths from the disease.

Nevertheless, demonstrators broke social isolation and crowded around the Ministries Esplanade and the Three Powers Plaza. In greeting his supporters from the Planalto ramp, Bolsonaro gathered hundreds of people in front of the building.
