Brazil Received 18.3 Million Requests for Emergency Aid on First Day

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Caixa Econômica Federal (Federal Savings Bank) reported that by Wednesday, April 8th, at 9 PM, 18.3 million Brazilians had completed their registration to collect the R$600 (US$150) emergency aid granted by the government to casual and unemployed workers as a measure against the economic impact of the coronavirus.

Of this total, 38 percent chose to be paid through the digital savings system. These are Brazilians who do not have a bank account or prefer not to use the existing ones.

In the case of digital savings deposits, withdrawing the funds in cash will not yet be possible; only digital transactions are allowed. A withdrawal schedule is still being prepared by the government.

According to Caixa, 93.9 million accesses to the website have been recorded. There have also been 780,000 calls to Central #111 for information and consultation.
