RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In a videoconference meeting held on Friday, 43 mayors of the Association of Municipalities of Western Paraná (AMOP) unanimously agreed to gradually reopen trade in the region’s cities as of this Wednesday.
“The maintenance of public services depends on the revenue that goes into the city’s treasury, resulting from companies’ turnover. One is linked to the other. Serenity is needed at this time. Without production, there is no revenue, and without revenue, there could be a blackout of all public services, including health,” says the mayor of Jesuítas and president of AMOP, Junior Weiller.
According to Junior, projections for the Transfer of Municipal Participation fund, the main source of revenue for most municipalities, particularly small and medium-sized ones, show a 20 percent drop in this pandemic period: “We can not compromise the economic stability, which ensures the maintenance of all public services, including human existence”.
This is Jair Bolsonaro’s discourse, winning over city mayors and reaching the interior of the country, where the health network is even more precarious than in metropolitan regions.
