Coronavirus: Number of Confirmed Cases Rises to 34 in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The number of confirmed cases of the new coronavirus has risen to 34 in Brazil, with nine new patients infected compared to Monday, March 9th. The bulletin was released by the Ministry of Health yesterday, March 10th, in Brasília. The number of cases has increased again after having remained stable between Sunday and Monday.

In addition to confirmed patients, 893 suspected cases have been reported, a reduction from Monday, when the Ministry of Health reported 930 people in this situation. The number of patients ruled out by the health authorities now stands at 780.

São Paulo continues to lead, with 19 cases. In addition, eight cases have been identified in Rio de Janeiro, two in Bahia, one in Espírito Santo, one in the Federal District, one in Minas Gerais, one in Alagoas, and one in Rio Grande do Sul.

Only three states have no confirmed or suspected cases: Roraima, Amapá, and Tocantins. Maranhão, which until yesterday had been in this position, recorded two suspected cases and two patients testing negative.

The States Health Secretaries have reiterated their request for the Federal Government’s help in fighting the new coronavirus. A total of R$1 billion (US$250 million) would be required to pay for the logistics of screening patients and admissions, and officials are asking Luiz Henrique Mandetta, the Minister of Health, for the immediate release of R$200 million.

The Ministry of Health also released the update of cases around the world, including information up to Monday evening. In total, 105,570 cases have been recorded, in addition to 3,800 deaths. The lethality rate, which was at 3.39 percent, climbed to 3.48 percent compared to the previous balance report on Sunday.

China accounts for the highest number of cases (80,900), followed by South Korea (7,380), Italy (7,370), Iran (6,500) and France (1,100). As for mortality rates, the United States leads (5.16 percent), followed by Italy (4.96 percent), China (3.86 percent) and Iran (2.95 percent).
