Brazil Drops in Global Talent Competitiveness Ranking – INSEAD

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil fell from 72nd to 80th place between 2019 and 2020 in the global talent competitiveness ranking (GTCI), prepared by INSEAD, the prominent French Business Administration School. The country obtained a 38.14 GTCI index (adopted to compare countries), below the average of the middle-high income countries, defined at 41.25.

The countries with the highest performance were Switzerland, United States, Singapore, Sweden, and Denmark. At the bottom end of the list were Yemen, Angola, Congo, Burundi, and Mozambique. The ranking examines 132 countries in a variety of aspects related to the economic and political environment, education, talent, and skills promotion.

This year, Brazil ranked better in terms of development (55th place) and talent retention (70th place). The worst performance occurred in the categores of technical knowledge (101st position) and talent attraction (96th position). In 2019, the country performed better in both categories (88th and 80th position, respectively). The worst performances were found in development (54th position) and talent retention (63rd position).

In the overall country context to enable talent to emerge, Brazil achieved the highest scores in the urban population (84.5), availability of graduate workers (77.4), competition intensity (68.2), information and communication technology infrastructure (58.1), and market (56.2).

The negative highlights emerged in cooperation between workers and employers (19.3), active labor policies (26.5), spending on research and development (27.4), corruption (28.3), and compensation for productivity (33.3).

In terms of attracting talent, Brazil has performed well in reducing gender inequality in education (86.1), the number of women graduates (82.2), tolerance with immigrants (69.8), foreign investment and technology transfer (61.1), and internal openness (56.1).

The weakest performances occurred in the attendance of international students (0.7), the number of immigrants (7.0), female leadership (16.8), and external openness (28.9).
