Three Suspected Cases of Coronavirus in Brazil, Says Minister

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Along with a 22-year-old female student, who is hospitalized in Belo Horizonte, two other people are suspected of carrying the virus. One of them is currently in Porto Alegre (RS) and another in Curitiba (PR).

According to the Ministry, these patients fall under the current definition of a suspected case. They presented fever and at least one respiratory symptom, in addition to having traveled to China, where the contamination began, in the past 14 days. The Ministry has not provided further details on the cases.

Data from the Ministry released on Tuesday morning showed that from January 3rd to 27th, 7,063 suspected cases of people with coronavirus in Brazil were examined. Of these, 127 required a more detailed examination and only the student’s case in Belo Horizonte had been classified as suspected.

Faced with the epidemic that has rapidly spread throughout Asia, and also reaching countries in Europe and North America, the Ministry recommends that Brazilians avoid traveling to China. Minister Luiz Henrique Mandetta urged that trips be made only if absolutely necessary.

“We advise against it while not prohibiting travel to China. We still don’t know what is new about this virus; we know that it is highly lethal. We do not recommend exposure to such a situation and then returning to Brazil and exposing more people. We recommend that, unless it is absolutely necessary, no trips are made until the whole picture is well defined”, he said during a press interview.
