229 People Displaced, Six Dead After Heavy Rainfall in Espírito Santo State

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL –  After the heavy rainfall that has affected the state’s southern region since Friday, January 17th, Espírito Santo records 229 displaced people, 182 homeless, one injured and six dead. The information is included in a bulletin released by the state’s Civil Defense at 11 AM on Sunday, January 19th.

The municipality with the highest number of displaced people is Vargem Alta: 212. Rio Novo do Sul has nine displaced people and Anchieta, eight. Anchieta has the highest number of homeless: 80. They are all currently settled in the Limeira Social Center.

Vargem Alta counts with 63 homeless people who are staying in two state schools. Iconha records 35 displaced people, currently staying at the city’s Catholic Church, and Rio Novo do Sul counts four displaced people. According to the Civil Defense, they were referred to social housing.

Iconha counts three deaths in the city. The city also recorded one person injured as a result of heavy downpours. In Alfredo Chaves, where rainfall was the heaviest (249.4 millimeters in 24 hours), three people also died: two trapped in the district of Cachoeirinhas; the other died in the district of Recreio.

According to the Civil Defense, the heaviest rainfall in 24 hours occurred in the municipalities of Castelo (11.05 mm), Itapemirim (9.60 mm), Rio Novo do Sul (8.20 mm) and Aracruz (5.60 mm). The other municipalities have records of accumulated rainfall of less than 05 mm.

For Monday, January 20th, the Center for Weather Forecasting and Climate Studies issued a weather warning for lightning storms, heavy rainfall, and gale in the municipalities of Afonso Cláudio, Água Doce do Norte, Alegre, Alto Rio Novo, Baixo Guandu, Barra de São Francisco, Brejetuba, Conceição do Castelo, Divino de São Lourenço, Dores do Rio Preto, Ecoporanga, Guaçuí, Ibatiba, Ibitirama, Irupi, Iúna, Laranja da Terra, Mantenópolis, Muniz Freire, Pancas and Venda Nova do Imigrante.
