Eduardo Bolsonaro Says Communism Worse Than Nazism

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Federal Deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PSL-SP) said communism and socialism are worse than Nazism. The statement was made on Friday night, January 17th, just hours after Roberto Alvim was fired from the Secretariat of Culture for paraphrasing a Nazi speech in a government video.

“Brazil rightly abhors Nazism, a nefarious system that built a machine that murdered six million Jews and brought the world into World War II. But much more murderous was and is communism/socialism, which keeps changing its name and reinventing itself, but keeps killing wherever it goes,” the third son of President Jair Bolsonaro wrote on Twitter.

Eduardo claimed that because of regimes like Josef Stalin (Soviet Union), Fidel Castro (Cuba) and Hugo Chávez/Nicolás Maduro (Venezuela), communism has killed more than 100 million. And he complained that, notwithstanding, only Nazism is criminalized in Brazil.

The PSL leader in the Chamber, the deputy further said he has presented a bill seeking to criminalize the support of communism in Brazil. “At the very least we should debate the ban on communism, a fact already established in Poland, Indonesia, and other countries, mainly those that freed themselves from the command of the former Soviet Union,” he said.

The bill cited by Eduardo Bolsonaro, however, was presented in 2016. And since then, it has not been able to advance in the House of Representatives.

Like Roberto Alvim’s statements, Eduardo Bolsonaro’s post sparked criticism on the Internet. Among other things, Internet users urged the Deputy to study history and work to solve the country’s real problems.

However some have supported the proposal to criminalize communism made by the President’s son, who has additionally advocated the return of the infamous AI-5 decree under Brazil’s military dictatorship. There were also, however, those who supported the deputy's proposal, who has already preached the return of AI-5 in Brazil, to criminalize communism. One of them was Congressman Filipe Barros (PSL-PR).Among them was Deputy Filipe Barros (Photo internet reproduction).

Another critic said that Eduardo’s speech resembles the ideology of the Nazi propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels: “Goebbels’ method: He repeats the lies so often that they begin to seem true. But anyone with the slightest knowledge of history does not fall for it,” he said.
