Brazilian Documentary ‘The Edge of Democracy’ Nominated for Oscar

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On Monday morning, January 13th, the Academy Awards announced the nominees for the best films of the year in several technical categories.

In the category of ‘Best Documentary Feature’, Brazil was nominated with “The Edge of Democracy”, by Brazilian director Petra Costa.

“The Edge of Democracy” (“Democracia em Vertigem” in Portuguese) shows the political past of the filmmaker in a personal and intimate way, exploring the context of the years from former President Lula’s first term until the impeachment of his successor Dilma Rousseff, analyzing the rise and fall of these rulers and the consequent political crisis in Brazil.

These are the other productions nominated for an Oscar in the same category:

  • American Factory
  • The Cave
  • For Sama
  • Honeyland

The ceremony to award the best of the cinema industry will take place on February 9th in Los Angeles.
