New Year’s Eve in Rio de Janeiro State Will Deploy 15,000 State Police Officers

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The State Police will deploy 15,000 officers and 2,000 vehicles throughout the state, including the capital, the Lakes Region and the Costa Verde. On Copacabana Beach, where 2.8 million people are expected to follow the shows and the fireworks, 2,049 police officers and 112 vehicles will be deployed, as well as 30 observation towers, 13 on the beach and 17 on the boardwalk.

The most famous New Year’s Eve celebration will also feature close crowd support groups from the Specialized Stadium Policing Battalion, Special Rounds and Crowd Control, as well as dog and horse policing.

The Airborne Group will monitor the entire shoreline, broadcasting real-time footage to the Integrated Command and Control Center (CICC) in Cidade Nova.

In the capital, the State Police will also be reinforced in other crowded areas, where there will be fireworks or shows: Flamengo Beach; Paquetá Island; Central Brazil, Madureira Park; IAPI da Penha; Bica Beach, on the Governador’s Island; Piscinão de Ramos; Recôncavo Beach, in Sepetiba; Guaratiba Beach; and the Barra da Tijuca and Recreio shores.

The State Police will also increase security in Niterói, Maricá, Cabo Frio and Angra dos Reis, where police officers will act in concert with the city governments’ public security, and in patrolling the state’s highway network, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Police and the highway concessionaires.

Civil Police

The Civil Police Secretariat announced that during Operation New Year’s Eve, which runs from 10 AM on December 31st to 10 PM on January 1st, it will work with increased staff in the police stations of Copacabana (12th PD), Ipanema (13th PD), Leblon (14th PD) Lapa (5th PD) Botafogo (10th PD), Rocinha (11th PD) and Gávea (15th PD).

There will also be a larger staff on both days at the specialized Tourism Support Stations (DEAT), in Leblon, the Police Service of the International Airport of Rio de Janeiro (DAIRJ), at the Galeão Airport, and the Child and Adolescent Protection (DPCA), located in Lapa, but will be based in the period at the headquarters of the Special Police Station for the Elderly (DEAPTI), in Copacabana.
