“Go Left, Buddy,” Ex-president Lula’s Voice Reaches Waze

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Waze users can now have the voice of former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from the App’s command. “Go left, buddy,” it says enthusiastically.

When it’s time to turn right, the voice drops the fun tone.

Waze stated that the recording did not originate from the App. Since 2017, a feature allows any user to record voice commands and share them with the community.

“The App features Voice Recorder, which allows users to personalize the voice commands and also share audio with each other,” it reported in a note.

The recordings provide the same commands as the standard voices available but do not say street names. In addition to Lula, there are also imitations of Sponge Bob and Scooby Doo’s voiceovers.

The commands given by “Lula” come with the ex-president’s animation. At the start of the trip, the driver gets an invitation: “Are you ready? I am! Come on, comrades!” When the “buddy” gets there, he or she hears a warm “Congratulations!”.

How to create a new voice?

To record, the user must access the menu Settings > Voice and Sound > Waze Voice, and then click on Record new voice. There, all possible commands during a trip must be recorded.

The App shows the recording of approximately 40 different commands on direction, warnings, instructions, and distance.

After saving, users may start using it and, if desired, share it with other users.
