Rape Cases Increase in São Paulo While Other Crimes Drop

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The number of rape cases in the state of São Paulo increased 14.4 percent in October compared to the same month last year.

In the tenth month of 2018, there were 1,141 crime reports, compared to 1,306 in October 2019. The other crimes recorded a reduction. The data were released on Friday, November 29th, by the Secretariat of Public Safety of the State of São Paulo (SSP).

The number of homicide victims in the state dropped from 264 in October 2018 to 259 in the same month in 2019. As a result, the rate for the past 12 months (from November 2018 to October 2019) was the lowest ever recorded since 2001: 6.51 victims per 100,000 people.

The number of lethal armed robberies has also declined. There were 18 victims of robbery followed by death in October 2019 against 28 victims recorded in the previous year. The armed robbery indicator is the lowest in the historical series since 2010.

Robbery in general dropped 2.7 percent, from 22,613 to 22,003, comparing October 2018 and 2019 – 610 fewer cases.

Overall thefts were down 3.8 percent, with 43,140 occurrences in the tenth month of 2019, compared to 44,841 in the same period last year.
