Rio Records Four Femicides in Forty-eight Hours

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The last one was in Belford Roxo, in the Baixada Fluminense, on Thursday night.

Adriana Valéria, 33, was reportedly murdered by her boyfriend Lucas Lemos on her birthday. The victim’s relatives left the Baixada Fluminense Homicide Police Station (DHBF) in the late morning of Friday escorted by police officers who, with the help of an armored car, removed the woman’s body from the neighborhood of Roseiral.

Witnesses say that Lucas was in the house where Adriana lived with her three children. After an argument, Lucas would have hanged the victim.

Jéssica da Silva Salles, 31, is another case of femicide that occurred on Thursday. The perpetrator, Osmar Antônio Oliveira, was arrested in the act according to the Civil Police. The Homicide Police Station opened an inquiry to determine the circumstances of the crime, and the investigation is underway.

Jessica had gone to Osmar’s house to collect personal belongings when she was killed by the man.

On Friday morning, Sirlene Ferreira de Lacerda, 38, was buried in the Retiro Municipal Cemetery, in Volta Redonda. She was shot in the head by her ex-boyfriend. The murder happened around 5:40 AM on Thursday. According to Diário do Vale website, Elias Paulo Ferreira, 37 years old, was dissatisfied with the end of the relationship.

Sirlene leaves two children, 18 and 16 years old.

According to the Civil Police, the victim was driving on the way to work when she was shot in the head. Sirlene died instantly and the car crashed into a wall on Avenida Ministro Salgado Filho. The family recognized the motorcycle used by the killer as belonging to Elias.

The last victim is Maria Eduarda Alves Lima, 17, shot in the head last Monday night by her partner in the house where they lived in São Gonçalo, in the Metropolitan Region of Rio. The young woman was buried this Friday morning. According to the police, the crime was premeditated.

Patrick Azeredo Silva, 22, worked as a security guard in a bank branch in the region and, instead of keeping the revolver in the bank safe at the end of his shift, he took it home.

Data from the Institute of Public Safety (ISP) show that femicide records are increasing in the state of Rio de Janeiro. According to the ISP, there were 63 cases from January to October this year. There were 55 cases recorded in the same period last year.

In all, there were 71 femicides recorded in the state in 2018.
