Ordinance Raises Shopping Limit for Those Crossing Brazil’s Border by Land

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The limit on tax-free purchases for those crossing the Brazilian border by land or river will increase from US$300 to US$500 per person as of January 1st, 2020.

Finance Ministry Ordinance No. 601 – published in yesterday’s edition of the Federal Gazette – raises the limit.

Last month, President Jair Bolsonaro had already announced that he would increase the limit, which should benefit those crossing the Brazilian border with Paraguay, for instance.

As of next year, the government will also increase the limit for purchases in duty-free shops, which will increase from the current US$500 to US$1,000.

Duty-free shops are stores located in departure and arrival halls of Brazilian airports where products are sold free of duties and taxes.

In addition to this limit for duty-free shops, there is also a limit for shopping abroad, which is US$500. As such, those traveling abroad by plane will be able to add the limits, which total US$1,500.

Purchases above the exemption limit can be taxed by the Federal Treasury.
