New Patch Regenerates Diabetic Skin and Prevents Amputation

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Mexican scientists have developed a revolutionary patch that regenerates the skin of diabetics in less than a month and prevents amputation cases.

It was developed by experts from the Materials Research Institute (IIM) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and contains nanofibers that help to regenerate skin, which is affected by wounds that do not heal.

Regeneration through the patch takes a maximum of 21 days and gives diabetic patients the ability to quickly regain quality of life.

How does it work?

The university explained that the patch is built of nanofibers that contain nano and microparticles, which carry bioactive substances.

When placed on damaged tissues, these bioactives dissolve and immediately begin to act.

If the patch is used in the early stages of injury, it can prevent limb amputation by acting quickly and preventing the multiplication of microorganisms and infections.

Every wound is severe, but when it comes to diabetics, the risk of infection is much higher because the skin takes longer to regenerate.

Awards

The invention has won many awards and the first position in the category of research projects in the field of innovation and technology of “Boosts Innovation in UNAM”.

“It is a great breakthrough because, for diabetic patients, a wound means changing their lifestyle, as well as affecting their health and psychological state,” said Concepción Peña Juárez, a post-doctoral researcher at IIM.

In Mexico, one in ten people is diabetic and one in twenty diabetics is forced to amputate.
