Wing Linked to PSL President Seeks to Remove Eduardo Bolsonaro From Committee

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The reason for this is that legislators linked to PSL president, Luciano Bivar, are demanding the removal from office of deputies threatening to abandon the party.

The removal of deputies from the Chamber of Deputies has been discussed at a bench meeting on Wednesday evening, October 9th.

In addition to the committee chaired by Eduardo Bolsonaro, the PSL also heads two other committees: the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ), with Fernando Francischini, and the Inspection Committee, with Léo Motta.

The two, however, are not among the group threatening to abandon the party.

Letter in support of Bolsonaro

Following Wednesday’s bench meeting, a group of 19 PSL deputies linked to Bolsonaro released a letter of dissent to the president, the main star of the party, but one who is discussing the prospect of abandoning it.

The document calls for “new practices” from the current leadership but says that the Bolsonarist wing of the bench “has not lost hope” that a “dialogue channel” will be opened.

In the letter, legislators do not mention leaving the party, but, in private, some refer to the document as a kind of ultimatum. On Wednesday morning, Bivar told Estadão/Broadcast that he believes the president has already decided to quit the party.

In an interview with the website O Antagonista, Bolsonaro said that he will not abandon the party of “his own free will”.

The president is seeking a legal solution to leave the PSL without his group’s legislators losing office as a result of party disloyalty.
