RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The confrontation between rival gangs on Wednesday, October 3rd, for the control of the Pedreira favela, in Costa Barros, north zone of Rio de Janeiro, left at least one dead and six injured.
The information was released by chief inspector Rodrigo Barros, from the Pavuna Precinct.
The two criminal groups are disputing the community’s drug sales points and on Wednesday afternoon there was a clash between the gangs. Buses were set on fire and the circulation of trains from the Belford Roxo branch of Supervia was interrupted.
Municipal schools in the area did not open yesterday, according to the Municipal Department of Education, due to the feeling of insecurity in the area.
The State Police cordoned off the area with men from the Special Operations Battalion (BOPE), who also raided the communities. The Civil Police was also involved in actions with district police and specialized units, such as the Special Resources Coordination (CORE).
