Brazilian Oil and Natural Gas Production Breaks Records in August

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) has released the production data for the month of August. Adding up the production of oil and natural gas, it came to 3.828 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) in Brazil.

According to the ANP, oil production was approximately 2.989 million barrels per day (bbl/d), an increase of 7.7 percent compared to the previous month and 18.5 percent compared to August 2018. This is a record volume. The last record had been recorded in May this year when 2.731 million bbl/d were produced.

Natural gas production was 133.3 million cubic meters per day (m3/d), surpassing that of July 2019, when 124 million cubic meters were produced, the highest volume recorded so far. In relation to the previous month, there was an increase of 7.4 percent, and in comparison with the same month in 2018, there was an increase of 25.3 percent.

Production in 110 [extremely deep] “pre-salt” wells was 1.928 million bbl/d of oil and 79.3 million m3/d of natural gas, totaling 2.427 million boe/d. There was an increase of 11.1 percent in relation to the previous month and 41.1 percent if compared to the same month in 2018. Pre-salt production accounted for 63.4 percent of total production in Brazil.

In August, the capture of natural gas was 97.5 percent. A total of 65.5 million m3/day were made available to the market. The gas flared in the month was 3.323 million m3/d, a reduction of 4.2 percent compared to the previous month and an increase of 6.1 percent if compared to the same month in 2018.

The offshore fields produced 96.5 percent of oil and 81.1 percent of natural gas. The fields operated by Petrobras produced 93.2 percent of oil and natural gas. Regarding the fields operated exclusively by Petrobras, they produced 43 percent of the total. The national production occurred in 7,118 wells, of which 676 were offshore and 6,442 were onshore.
