While Brazil’s Government Fights Gender Ideology, Barbie Launches No-Gender Dolls

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Advocates of the “God, Homeland and Family” ideology, as introduced and championed in Brazil by Jair Bolsonaro and his evangelical counselors, will probably be shocked by this news.

Mattel, the manufacturer of Barbie dolls, has launched a line of customizable dolls without defined gender. According to the company, the Creatable World dolls are “free from any label” in a world that “celebrates the positive impacts of inclusion”.

Mr Doria and Crivella, these dolls absolutely must be suspended from import, right? They are a danger to Brazil's children and young people.
One wonders whether Messrs. Doria and Crivella would want to ban the sale of these dolls, alleging them a danger to Brazil’s children and young people. (Photo internet reproduction)

This approach gives a whole new meaning to “gender ideology” so desperately fought against by the current government.

The kits offer “endless combinations in a single box”, inviting children to design their own characters from various clothing options, accessories and hairstyles.

“Through research, we hear that children don’t want their toys dictated by gender norms. This line allows children to express themselves freely,” said one of Mattel’s vice presidents, Kim Culmone, in a statement. The company says it has worked on the line with a team of experts, parents, doctors, and children.

The Creatable World line consists of six different kits, available in a variety of skin tones. Each kit includes a doll, two hair options, and several clothing and accessory options. In the United States, the recommended price is US$30 (R$120).

The company has not yet announced the sale forecast in Brazil, should they not be banned by the government.
