Number of Murders in São Paulo Drops 9.38 Percent in August

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The number of victims has decreased by 9.87 percent, resulting in 23 lives being spared, according to a monthly balance released yesterday, September 25th, by the São Paulo State Secretariat of Public Safety.

According to the bulletin, the last 12 months’ rates – from September 2018 to August 2019 – have dropped to 6.25 cases, with 6.57 homicide victims per 100,000 inhabitants.

The balance shows that armed robbery has also dropped in the monthly comparison, from 23 to 10 occurrences recorded in August. The number of victims fell from 23 to 11.

Rape increased by 0.29 percent, with three more cases compared to the months of August 2018 and 2019. There was one case of extortion through kidnapping last month and this indicator was zero in August 2018.

Thefts and robberies retreated 26.3 percent from 4,822 to 3,554. Vehicle thefts also declined 7.67 percent in August, with 7,904 reported against 8,561 last year. Cargo thefts fell from 748 to 592, a drop of 20.86 percent.

According to the data, thefts, in general, rose by 0.38 percent in August, with a variation of 82 more cases recorded. The number of thefts fell 0.91 percent in the period, with 42,936 occurrences.

The secretariat also reported that the State, Civil and Scientific Police carried out 17,576 arrests in August, corresponding to an increase of 1.06 percent.

In the month, 1,034 firearms were pulled off the streets and 4,172 drug trafficking arrests were recorded.
