Food Price Drop Slows Consumer Inflation

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The drop in food prices slowed consumer inflation within the General Price Index – 10 (IGP-10) of September, reported on Monday, September 16th, the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV).

The Consumer Price Index (CPI-10) rose 0.05 percent in September, after an advance of 0.24 percent in August. Five of the eight expense classes have recorded lower variation rates, with emphasis on the Food group, which went from a high of 0.14 percent in August to a reduction of 0.68 percent in September. Vegetables fell 12.36 percent in September, compared to a 3.79 percent drop in August.

The remaining declines occurred in groups such as Housing (from 0.99 percent to 0.55 percent), Health and Personal Care (from 0.35 percent to 0.19 percent), Miscellaneous Expenses (from 0.30 percent to -0.07 percent) and Clothing (from -0.09 percent to -0.20 percent).

The main contributions came from residential electricity tariffs (from 5.14 percent to 2.23 percent), hygiene and personal care items (from 0.27 percent to -0.43 percent), pet food (from 1.27 percent to -0.96 percent) and footwear (from 0.23 percent to -0.45 percent).

Conversely, there was an increase in Transport (from -0.31 percent to -0.17 percent), Education, Reading and Recreation (from -0.45 percent to 0.31 percent), and Communication (from 0.12 percent to 0.46 percent). Ethanol (from -1.64 percent to 2.72 percent), airfare (from -12.83 percent to 1.23 percent) and residential telephone charges (from 0.50 percent to 1.12 percent) were all influential items.
