Bolsonaro Claims Part of Mass Media is Enemy of His Family

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – President Jair Bolsonaro said on Friday, September 13th, that “part of the mass media” is his enemy. “As we fight among ourselves, the enemy grows stronger. We can’t please everyone, they’ve been scouring my life and that of my family since 1988, when I was elected a city councilor,” he wrote on social media.

“Our enemy: part of MASS MEDIA. It will not leave us alone. If we believe it, it will be the end for everyone,” said the president.

On Facebook, the post was joined by a video that shows two wild animals, which look like deer, fighting each other, until a predator approaches and attacks one of them.

In another text, the president criticized Época magazine for a report on the wife of Eduardo Bolsonaro, his son. In a message on social media, he wrote that the content is an example of “press without boundaries” and he attacked the author of the article by name, accusing him of having broken an ethical rule.

The report published by the magazine recounts conversations between the reporter and career psychologist and coach Heloísa Wolf Bolsonaro during a month in which the journalist was her student. “He had sessions with my daughter-in-law Heloísa (psychologist, Eduardo’s wife) and recorded everything. What should only be between the two, for ethical reasons, now comes out in public,” the president criticized.

Eduardo said on social media that he will sue the journalist who wrote the article and “most likely the magazine Época/Grupo Globo due to the disclosure of this blatant crime against my family”.

“Didn’t the “professionals” of @RevistaEpoca think that the public could be disgusted with this kind of “story”? Or are they so accustomed to having this kind of conduct that they imagined that this would be just another ‘article’ to try to belittle my family?”, questioned Eduardo on Twitter.

In a public statement, the Palácio do Planalto lamented the report and said that the magazine tried, through the psychologist’s work, “to distort verified information with the sole purpose of attacking the Bolsonaro family”.

“Acting in bad faith and directing the result of a planned situation does not reflect the exercise of correct and honest journalism in the Brazilian media,” the Planalto statement said.

It is not the first time that the president has attacked the press for not liking the outcome of reports. Last month, he said that Brazil will face difficulties due to the “irresponsibility of the press”, “Brazil will reach the situation in Venezuela. That’s what most of the mass Brazilian press wants. And it’s always picky, campaigning against Brazil,” Bolsonaro said.
