Brazilian Volkswagen Classic Cars Participate in German Rally

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A Volkswagen SP2, a Karmann-Ghia TC, and a Brasília, the 1970s and 1980s Brazilian classics, will compete in a rally in Germany at the end of this week.

The trio, which belongs to Volkswagen’s collection of classic cars, will travel the 580 km between the cities of Dresden and Leipzig in the Sachsen Classic. The route will take three days and is not a speed rally.

The event gathers several antique vehicles of different makes and times. The Volkswagen Classic team itself will introduce three other cars on the road: a Karmann Ghia Type 14, a Scirocco I SL and a B2 CL Passat.

The 17th edition of the Sachsen Classic is being held in eastern Germany. Only vehicles built up to 1976 are allowed, in addition to some selected “intruders” built up to 1999.

The Brasília, SP2, and TC models were exclusively designed, produced, and sold in Brazil. The models in the rally were produced in 1980, 1974 and 1970, respectively, and have German plates.

The SP2 was released in 1972, with production up to 1976. Approximately 11,000 models were produced in this period. Its design is still highly acclaimed, along with a 1,700 cm³ air-cooled engine with 75 horsepower. In spite of its bold look, sportiness was never its strong suit.

The Karmann-Ghia TC is an elegant 2+2-seat coupé, produced between 1970 and 1976. It featured a 1,600 cm³ and 50 hp engine.

The Brasília is the best known of the trio. Released in 1973, it was in production for almost ten years, until 1982. During this period, almost one million units were sold.
