Brazil’s Government Suspends Use of Mobile Radars on Federal Highways

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – President Jair Bolsonaro ordered the suspension of the use of mobile speed cameras on federal highways. The order was published on Thursday, August 15th, in the Federal Gazette and was issued by the Ministry of Justice, responsible for the Federal Highway Police (PRF).

The order does not specify when the measure comes into force, but Bolsonaro said on Thursday that the suspension would become effective on Monday, August 19th.

The G1 news site questioned the PRF and the ministries of Justice and Infrastructure on when the suspension will actually begin but did not get a response until the last update of this report.

On Monday, Bolsonaro had stated that he intended to end mobile radars in the country by next week. At the time, he said it was his own decision and that it was “only determined to the PRF [Federal Highway Police] not to use them anymore.” The president, however, said he could go back if someone “proves that this use is good.”
