RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The City Hall of São Paulo published on Saturday, August 10th, a decree regulating the use of shared electric scooters in the city of São Paulo.

The maximum speed allowed for scooters, either in bicycle paths or lanes, is twenty kilometers per hour.

No one under the age of eighteen may use scooters. Users will also not be allowed to freely return the electric scooters outside stations or out of parking points.

To come into force, the new rules still require complementary resolutions from the Municipal Road Use Committee. (Photo internet reproduction)

Parking or placing the equipment on public roads will also be prohibited, whether on bicycle paths or lanes, on sidewalks, walkways, median and lateral flowerbeds, roadsides, lanes and other portions of the streets.

For the new rules to come into force, they require complementary resolutions by the Municipal Road Use Committee, which will have sixty days to determine the station set-up criteria, the use of headgear by users, the number of scooters allowed per city area and the public price to be charged to operators interested in providing the service, in addition to inspection methods.

According to the city government, companies interested in providing the service in the city are expected to promote educational campaigns on safety standards, the appropriate use and circulation of equipment, in addition to providing information on the coverage set out in the contracted insurance policy.
