Brazilian Wins Gold and Makes History at Fencing World Cup in Hungary

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Nathalie Moellhausen won Brazil’s first fencing gold medal, in the Women’s Individual Épée event, by defeating Chinese Sheng Lin in the final, by 13/12 in overtime, on Thursday, July 18th in the Fencing World Cup held in Budapest, Hungary.

In addition to becoming world champion at age 33, the naturalized Brazilian, formerly an Italian citizen, won the first gold medal for Brazil in the history of this competition.

Following the World Cup in Hungary, Nathalie is already preparing for the Pan American Games in Lima. In the Peruvian capital, she will be defending the bronze medals won both individually and by teams for Brazil in 2015, during the Toronto Games.

At the end of the London 2012 Olympic Games, Nathalie started competing for Brazil and, in addition to the medals at the Toronto 2015 Games, she also represented the country at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, when she made it to the quarterfinals and finished in the competition’s top eight.

When representing Italy, the fencer had already won a gold medal in teams at the Turkey World Cup in 2009, as well as bronze medals at the France World Cup in 2010, and Italy in 2011, in teams.
