Prison Guard Shoots at Family Car in Rio’s West Zone

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A prison guard shot at least eight rounds at a family car in Realengo, in Rio’s west zone. Three people were in the vehicle at the time.

"Can you see the bullet hole in the seat? Exactly where I was. If I hadn't gotten down, I would have been shot in the middle of the chest," said the passenger.

According to the police, the officer mistook the family vehicle for his own, which had been stolen in the same area. The incident occurred on Sunday night, July 7th, on Piraquara Street.

A video published on social media by one of the victims shows at least eight bullet holes in the car, most of which in the driver’s door.

One of the shots struck the back seat, but luckily, the woman on the seat managed to get down and avoid being hit.

“Can you see the bullet hole in the seat? Exactly where I was. If I hadn’t gotten down, I would have been shot in the middle of my chest,” said the passenger.

The driver was the only one grazed in the arm and taken to Albert Schweitzer Hospital, but is out of danger.

Witnesses called the police, and the Bangu precinct police officers went to the scene and took the prison official to the police station.

Shot by the Army

In April this year, army soldiers shot a family car in Guadalupe. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office indicted twelve soldiers for the deaths of musician Evaldo dos Santos Rosa, 51, and waste collector Luciano Macedo, who was passing by and tried to help his family.

The indictment mentions reports of 257 shots being fired from rifles and pistols. The car in which the musician was sitting, who died on the spot, was struck by 62 shots.

Evaldo’s father-in-law was also injured in the raid. The family was on their way to a baby shower. Evaldo’s wife, the couple’s son and a friend were also in the vehicle but were not injured.
