RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – This Thursday, May 16th, the Cinemateca at Rio’s Museu de Arte Moderna will be hosting the fifth session of their Cineclube Retrolâmpago, with a showing of Charlie Chaplin’s A Dog’s Life and The Kid at 6:30 PM.
In keeping with Cineclube Retrolâmpago’s love of authentic cinematic experiences, the session will be showing two exclusive cuts of Chaplin’s masterpieces, courtesy of Brazilian silent movie enthusiast João Antonio Franz.
Franz is an advertising professional, producer, comedian, and part-time researcher of archive images, including those of Chaplin, Jerry Lewis, and Chico Anysio.
During his research, Franz has put together a cut of The Kid which he believes is as close as possible to the original version released in 1921.
This restored version contains three scenes discarded by Chaplin when the film was re-released in the seventies, and it also uses, wherever possible, the original 1921 footage. A Dog’s Life will also be presented in a version that is as close as possible to the original 1918.
Both films are classics of the silent-era, with The Kid having been chosen to be preserved in the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry in 2011, for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” It is considered a watershed in Chaplin’s development, mainly due to its more complex story and pioneering combination of comedic and dramatic elements.
