RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – President Jair Bolsonaro said that he would soon submit a provisional measure to Congress to extend the period of validity of the National Driver’s License from five to ten years.

There is no pleasure in driving anymore, anywhere you go it is full of radars.
There is no pleasure in driving anymore; anywhere you go it is full of radars.

In an interview to SBT’s Silvio Santos show on May 5th, he defended the increase on the tolerated threshold of points in a drivers license and the removal of radars from federal highways.

“Twenty points are easily lost. The driver is ambushed everywhere,” he said. “There is no pleasure in driving anymore, anywhere you go it is full of radars. The radar bypassed the concept of protecting life; it’s a nickel-hunter to increase revenue. It’s money you take from the people,” argued the president.

According to Bolsonaro, when he took office, there were some 8,000 applications for new radars which were filed. He added that the detectors installed on federal highways would also be removed, as contracts with the supplying companies expire.
