RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The government of President Jair Bolsonaro said that it performed a group of technical studies “aimed at the implementation and use of technologies” to detect the presence of toxic substances in drivers.
According to the publication earlier this month, specific devices will be able to check up to eight types of narcotics, through a saliva sample, and register the presence of drugs in the body. These devices have already been called “drogômetros” (“drugmeters”).
As of 2020, it is expected that in addition to the breathalyzer, DUI checkpoints will also test if the driver consumed marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines and methamphetamine. According to the ministry, the group has 12 months to complete the procedure and “to draw steps to implement the device in the national territory”.
