MGMT to play Rio’s Circo Voador in Lapa on Wednesday

By Jack Arnhold, Contributing Reporter

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – This Wednesday, November 14th, American psychedelic indie rockers MGMT will be gracing the stage of Rio’s famous Circo Voador in Lapa for the first time in their career, as they tour Brazil in support of their latest album, ‘Little Dark Age.’

The band earned numerous awards and nominations over their career, including a Grammy Award for ‘Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classica’l for the Justice remix of ‘Electric Feel,’ as well as a nomination for the ‘Best New Artist’ Grammy Award and ‘Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals,’ for their single, ‘Kids,’ Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Brazil News

Formed in 2002 by college classmates Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, MGMT (formerly ‘The Management’) received almost overnight acclaim following the release of their debut album, 2007’s ‘Oracular Spectacular’ – which included some of the biggest indie hits of the decade, including ‘Time to Pretend,’ ‘Electric Feel,’ and, of course ‘Kids.’

This stratospheric rise was followed up by 2010’s album ‘Congratulations,’ which was largely viewed as a testament to the band’s commitment to producing adventurous and challenging music, as well as to their talent as song-writers and musicians. In 2014, the band made an appearance at the Rio de Janeiro ‘Circuito Banco do Brasil’ alongside Frejat, Pitty and Kings of Leon.

After a long break from the recording studio, the band have released ‘Little Dark Age,’ their third album, on February 9th of this year. This album marks the first release of new material by MGMT in five years, and it has seen the band receive plaudits from a majority of critics, subsequently ranking the highest of the group’s albums on review aggregator Metacritic.

The songs from the new album will form the basis of MGMT’s show in Brazil this Wednesday, but fans are virtually guaranteed a smattering of the megahits from the ‘Oracular Spectacular’ era that made the band such a big name on festival circuits worldwide. The ‘Little Dark Age’ tour has already seen the group play sold out shows in Paris, London, Amsterdam, Berlin and Brussels.
