RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The bi-monthly SESI in Jazz Festival stops at Largo do Machado this Saturday, November 9th with a tribute to legendary Brazilian poet and composer Vinícius de Moraes. Vinícius’ daughter Georgina da Moraes will be joined by the female voices of Quarteto em Cy and Wanda Sá.
The jazz performances on Saturday start at 6PM on a stage on Largo do Machado square in Catete, next to the metro station of the same name on Rua do Catete. The outdoors concert is for free.
The tribute to the legendary poet pays homage to what would have been his 100th birthday and runs under the motto “Como Dizia o Poeta Vinicius de Moraes” – literally “How poet Vincius de Moraes said”, but also a reference to one of his bossa nova classics with violinist Toquinho (Como dizia o poeta).
The SESI In Jazz Festival, a project of SESI Serviço Social da Indústria (Social Service of the Industry), brings new and old jazz talents to Rio’s streets with free performances every two months. New jazz musicians and bands can apply via SESI to participate in future sessions.
Carioca Vinícius de Moraes was not only a poet, but also composed many lyrics of Brazilian songs that have become all-time classics, the most famous being “Garota de Ipanema”. He was also a bossa nova composer, playwright and diplomat. He formed important partnerships with the likes of Tom Jobim, Toquinho and Baden Powell.
