By Chesney Hearst, Senior Contributing Reporter

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Rio Times recently announced the Rio Writer MixUp event, dedicated to authors, screenwriters and journalists, as well as publishers and film producers – set for Thursday, August 15th at Ipanema’s Gringo Café. The gathering will offer a chance to share interests and talk about the writing process, as well as help navigate the business in both Rio and internationally.

Inspired by the ongoing book signing events held for the Rio expatriate community’s own, Julia Michaels and her recent book release, “Solteira no Rio de Janeiro” (“Single in Rio de Janeiro”), editor and publisher of The Rio Times Stone Korshak with partners and co-promoters GreenGo Films decided to organize an event where writers and those in the city’s writing scene could mix, mingle, network and discuss their writing and the works of others.

Included among the very special guests for this event will be author of “Sonhando com Sotaque” (“Dreaming with an Accent”) and “Tropeços Nos Trópicos – Crônicas de um Gringo Brasileiro” (“Stumbling in the Tropics – Tales of a Brazilian Gringo”), Michael Kepp and of course, the inspiration behind the event, American journalist, founder of RioReal blog and novelist Julia Michaels.

“I’m thrilled to be invited to the MixUp,” Michaels told The Rio Times. “I love to talk about writing and with writers and I adore the Gringo Café! I haven’t done too many interviews yet so I’m not sick of talking about the book, yet…” Michaels described her recent book, “Solteira no Rio de Janeiro” as: “My adventures as a fifty-something gringa in Rio de Janeiro, in which my own transformation paralleled that of my adopted city.”

The event runs from 7PM-11PM, and from 7PM-9PM the Gringo Café will also offer R$10 glasses of Fine Wines (the co-Sponsor of the event) with dinner (entrees, salads and sandwiches) and a 2-for-1 caipirinhas and caipivodka special. Korshak explained; “It could have been a Hemingway cocktail night, but what Tony is doing with his wine club is pretty amazing, and seemed like a good fit for writers on a [Rio] winter night.”

Everyone is encouraged to come out to the event: from authors and book publishers, screenwriters and film producers, poets, journalists, bloggers and anyone who enjoys writing and reading. Organizers will soon announce a DJ for the night, as well as other special guest authors to round out the evening at the Gringo Café.

This event is the second in a series of Rio MixUps, the first was the Rio DJ MixUp, where DJs, clubgoers, promoters and one very special guest came together to share their love of music. The purpose of the events is to bring international arts and culture together in Rio.
