Telegram deletes message against Brazil’s Fake News (Censorship) Bill after Supreme Court threat

Telegram deleted on Wednesday (10) the message sent to its users criticizing the Fake News (Censorship) Bill after Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes threatened the Social Media with suspension.

The text against the project was deleted by the platform around 14:25.

Earlier on Wednesday, Moraes ordered the deletion of the message and the sending of a retraction.

If the decision was not complied with, the minister had threatened to suspend the application nationwide for 72 hours.

On Tuesday (9), Telegram sent its users a message stating that “Brazil is about to approve a law that will end the freedom of expression.”

According to the text, the bill “grants censorship powers to the government and is unnecessary.”

At 2:38pm this Wednesday, the official Telegram channel was still showing part of the message against the fake news bill.

However, when clicking on the link “read here why”, the platform directs the user to the Telegram Brazil channel, where the full message was deleted.
